Tricycles

Old tricycles are still widespead in China. Street vendors use them to carry their merchandise around, while farmers use them to bring the harvest from their farm to the city. The word "bike" in Chinese is written 自行车 and is very difficult to pronounce for a Westerner (zixingche). It litterally means "self-propelled vehicle"... The word "car" 汽车 (qiche) litterally means "steam vehicle"; the word "train" 火车 (huoche) means "fire vehicle" and the word "bus" 公共汽车 (gonggongqiche) means "public steam vehicle". Chinese is such an idiomatic language!

Les vieux tricycles sont encore très répandus en Chine. Les vendeurs ambulants les utilisent pour transporter leur marchandise, alors que les fermiers les utilisent pour transporter leur récolte à la ville. Le mot "vélo" en chinois s’écrit 自行车.

La palabra "bicicleta" en chino se escribe 自行车. Es una palabra muy dificil de pronunciar para los occidentales (zixingche). Si uno trata de traducirlo literalmente, descomponiendo la palabra, significa "vehículo autopropulsado"... la palabra "automovíl" 汽车 (qiche) significa, literalmente, "vehículo de vapor"; la palabra "tren" 火车 (huoche), significa "vehículo de fuego" y la palabra "autobus" 公共汽车 (gonggongqiche) significa "vehículo de vapor público". El chino es un idioma muy idiomático!

I'm a fan of tricycles, myself. While also practical, I find myself strangely attracted to the mysterious qualities of the number three. Especially when found in everyday objects in Chinese side streets. ;-)
